Newman Fighting Cardinals (Wausau, WI) backers were pleased Tuesday as they saw their basketball squad hold off the visiting Marathon Red Raiders (Marathon, WI), 73-69 in a league bout.

With the victory, Newman upgrades its record to 7-1 on the campaign. The Fighting Cardinals travel to St. Mary Catholic (Neenah, WI) to play the Zephyrs in a non-league bout on Friday, December 30. The Zephyrs come into the bout with a record of 7-0.

Next up, the Red Raiders play the Iola-Scandinavia Thunderbirds (Iola, WI) in a non-league bout, on Thursday, December 22. Marathon will attempt to upgrade on its 6-1 season record. The Thunderbirds come into the bout with a 0-7 record after their 68-30 non-league loss to Winneconne (Winneconne, WI).
