Pennsylvania High School Basketball - Big Spring succumbs to Bishop McDevitt

The Bishop McDevitt Crusaders defeated the host Big Spring Bulldogs basketball squad by a final score of 61-51 in Monday's league outing.

Next, the Crusaders clash with the Cedar Cliff Colts (Camp Hill, PA) in a non-league outing, on Monday, December 29. Bishop McDevitt will attempt to upgrade on its 6-0 season record. The Colts come into the outing with a 8-1 record after their 57-48 non-league win over Dallastown (Dallastown, PA).

With the loss, Big Spring falls to 3-3 on the campaign. The Bulldogs host Dover (Dover, PA) to play the Eagles in a non-league bout on Monday, January 5. The Eagles go into the bout with a record of 1-4.

Coaches summary

First Quarter

Bishop McDevitt continued their perfect season with an impressive 61-51 road victory over Big Springs, improving to 6-0 on the year. The team showed tremendous balance and resilience in what turned into a competitive away game, with multiple players stepping up to secure the win.

Second Quarter

The game began with Bishop McDevitt asserting their dominance early, jumping out to a commanding 20-6 lead after the first quarter behind a stellar performance from Ethan Hammer, who knocked down both of his three-point attempts and scored 7 points in the opening frame. Kenyon Portee Jr. and Patrick Denisco also contributed effectively, combining for 8 points as the team built their early advantage through balanced scoring and strong shooting.

Third Quarter

Big Springs made their strongest push in the second quarter, closing the gap significantly with a 7-point scoring streak that included back-to-back three-pointers, cutting Bishop McDevitt's lead to just 26-20 at halftime. However, the third quarter belonged to Bishop McDevitt, as they pulled away once again behind another outstanding period from Hammer, who added 9 more points including a crucial three-pointer that helped extend the lead to 45-34 entering the final quarter.

Fourth Quarter

Ethan Hammer led all scorers with 23 points on exceptional 71% shooting from the field, going a perfect 2-for-2 from three-point range. Kenyon Portee Jr. provided excellent support with 15 points on 7-of-15 shooting, while Patrick Denisco chipped in 11 points and Tommy Jones added 8 points with solid three-point shooting. The victory showcased the team's depth and ability to respond to adversity, as they weathered Big Springs' comeback attempts and pulled away for a well-earned double-digit victory on the road.
