Florida High School Flag Football - Tavares loses to East Ridge

The Tavares Bulldogs flag football team (Tavares, FL), was topped 26-2 in Thursday's non-league bout with the host East Ridge Knights (Clermont, FL)
With the win, East Ridge advances its record to 5-2 on the season. The Knights travel to Foundation Academy (Winter Garden, FL) to encounter the Lions in a non-league bout on Friday, March 21. The Lions go into the bout with a record of 0-0.
The Bulldogs now sport a 1-6 record. They take the field next when they host South Lake for a non-league outing on Tuesday, March 25. Tavares will clash with a Eagles squad coming off a 12-6 non-league win over Eustis (Eustis, FL). The Eagles record now stands at 1-5.
First Quarter
East Ridge faced a rocky and wet start, dropping a snap and granting Tavares a safety after the third down snap sailed over the quarterback into the end zone. Playing center, junior Giulianna Casas is usually rock-steady. The team bounced back on their next possession after the defense stopped Tavares near midfield with a crucial flag pull by junior linebacker Shenoa Nigagliani. The offense went 37 yards in seven plays which saw a sixteen yard dash by junior runningback Scarlet Barahona for a first down and a nine yard grab by center Casas followed two plays later with her scoring a 1 yard catch in the end zone from senior quarterback Marissa Estrada.
Second Quarter
East Ridge and Tavares traded interceptions in the second quarter. Senior linebacker Fabiola Casas picked one of in midfield and made a modest push into Tavares territory. Tavares was covering sophomore receiver Tina Feliciano tightly and got a pick of their own, but Tina made the flag-pull. The Knight defense stopped the Bulldogs in four plays, but two off-balance passes by East Ridge gave Tavares the ball again on third and seventeen driving North from midfield. Two plays later Nigagliani got the first of her two interceptions to restore the offense. After a five yard grab by freshman receiver Charlotte Garcia got the Knights a first down across midfield, Barahona scampered thirty seven yards up the right side for the second East Ridge touchdown and center Casas converted the extra point with a pass from Estrada.
Third Quarter
Tavares started the third quarter going south with the ball and Nigaglioni got her second pick giving the Knights the ball in the red zone and knocking on the door. After two runs yielded no net positive result Estrada threw the ball into the hands of Garcia in the end zone on third and short and center Casas proved the extra point making the score 20-2.
Fourth Quarter
Sophomore linebacker Catlyn Matta had he first career interception off a ball batted by junior linebacker Nolani Hernandez and made a good return to the thirty none yard line. After senior reserve quarterback Fabiola Zapata ran for the first down into Tavares territory and Scarlet Barahona added another ten yard run, a dropped snap and an incomplete pass forced the Knights to punt. Senior punter Fabiola Casas, who also plays linebacker, dropped the ball neatly on the five yard line but Tavares let it roll into the end zone for the touchback. Four plays later junior rusher Amirah Newton got her fifth flag pull of the evening and forced the turnover on downs. On second and fifteen Zapata linked up with senior receiver Kylee Beddome, who slipped out of the grasp of two Bulldog defenders to score the final touchdown. The referees blew the whistle to signal the end of the game, so the Knights had to take the W without that final extra point.
