North Carolina High School Volleyball - West Johnston edged by Clayton

The Clayton Comets held off the visiting West Johnston Wildcats volleyball team by a score of 3-2 in Wednesday's non-league test.
The Comets now have a 2-1 record. They put it on the line next when they host Wake Forest for a non-league test on Monday, August 21. Clayton will confront a Cougars team coming off a 3-0 non-league loss to Green Hope (Cary, NC). The Cougars record now stands at 0-2.
The Wildcats (0-2) will now prepare for their test against Garner (Garner, NC). The Trojans enter the non-league test with a 3-1 record. In their last test, Garner was nudged by South Johnston (Four Oaks, NC), 3-0, in a non-league test.
Match Summary
The West Johnston girls team fought incredibly hard tonight in a determined, spirited effort to take down a good Clayton team on its home court. The West girls jumped out early and stayed strong to hold off the Lady Comets 25 - 19 in the first set. The Clayton girls barely held of the Lady Wildcats in a tense 2nd set, winning 22 - 25. Clayton continued its good play in the 3rd set, winning 18 - 25. In the 4th set, the Wildcat girls showed terrific resiliency by "putting their foot on the gas" and silencing the student section with a quick and easy win 25 - 13. In the 5th and deciding set, the Clayton girls were able to muster a solid finish with a 2 - 6 run to earn the victory 11 - 15. West saw terrific improvement tonight from its first match against Garner. There is much to build upon as these girls continue to grow together as a unit and just get better and better.
