Basketball Game Preview: Oceanside Pirates vs. La Costa Canyon Mavericks

The Oceanside Pirates will challenge the La Costa Canyon Mavericks at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Given that both suffered a loss in their last games, they both have a little extra motivation heading into this matchup.

Last Friday, Oceanside came up short against Carlsbad and fell 53-40. The Pirates have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

The loss doesn't tell the whole story though, as several players had good games. One of the most active was Alana Hoskins, who posted nine points along with eight steals and six assists. The team also got some help courtesy of Aliyah Samad, who scored ten points and eight rebounds.

Even though they lost, Oceanside smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 18 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive boards in 15 consecutive contests.

Meanwhile, after soaring to 56 points the game before, La Costa Canyon was a bit more limited in their game on Friday. They lost 50-25 to Torrey Pines. While losing is never fun, the Mavericks can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 511th, while the Falcons are ranked 203rd).

Oceanside now has a losing record at 9-10. As for La Costa Canyon, their loss dropped their record down to 11-11.

Oceanside beat La Costa Canyon 45-38 in their previous meeting back in February of 2024. Does Oceanside have another victory up their sleeve, or will La Costa Canyon turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
