Basketball Recap: Justine Mejia's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Arleta over Leuzinger

After flying high against Temple City on Friday, Arleta came back down to earth. The Arleta Mustangs took a 52-43 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Leuzinger Olympians on Saturday.

Arleta lost despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Justine Mejia, who posted 19 points in addition to eight rebounds and four steals. Mejia is on a roll when it comes to boards, as she's now pulled down eight or more in the last four games she's played. Another player making a difference was Tatiana Hernandez, who had eight points in addition to six assists and three steals.

Even though they lost, Arleta smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 14 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least ten offensive boards in 17 consecutive games dating back to last season.

Leuzinger was led to victory by Tatyana Aubry and Brianna Ike. Aubry went 7 of 17 on her way to 18 points along with seven assists and five steals, while Ike went 9 of 19 on her way to 20 points and seven rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Sovereign Woods, who put up nine points.

Arleta's record now sits at 8-4. As for Leuzinger, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 5-8.

Arleta didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next match, a 54-35 defeat against Burroughs on the 31st. As for Leuzinger, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next contest, a 58-44 victory against Cleveland on the 31st.
