Brea Olinda prepares to host a special TOC 2015-16 ceremony where the girls basketball team will be nationally recognized by MaxPreps.
MaxPreps is pleased to announce that the
Brea Olinda (CA) Wildcats have officially been named to the 11th Annual MaxPreps Tour of Champions presented by the Army National Guard, which is in its 10th year honoring girls basketball.
This is one of the most prestigious team awards in all of high school sports and it is an exclusive honor reserved for the top 100 teams nationwide. In order to be eligible, a team must win a state championship and be highly ranked in the MaxPreps National Rankings. For basketball, only 20 of the country's best are invited and with over 40,000 competing varsity teams. This puts the Wildcats ahead of 99.9 percent of their opponents!
Head coach Jeff Sink and his defending Southern California Division III state champions opened up the 2015-16 season as a top-early contender in the MaxPreps California girls basketball
Fab 5. The team was projected to go all the way as they only graduated three seniors last year and returned Arizona State-bound Reili Richardson.
As expected, the Wildcats kicked off the season with an overpowering 98-13 win over Sierra Vista which set the tone for the rest of their season as they went undefeated (8-0) in the Crestview League and Southern Section Division 3AA.
In early March, No. 6 seeded Brea Olinda defeated El Camino Real (62-50) in the first round of the
2016 CIF Division I state tournament and proceeded to eliminate Alemany (61-46), Troy (52-45) and Vista Murrietta (64-55) for the chance to play for a 10th state title.
On Mar. 24 Richardson scored 26 and Tyiona Watkins added 22 to lead Brea Olinda to a 64-51 Division I state final victory over fourth-seeded St. Francis at Sleep Train Arena in Sacramento. The Wildcats never lost control after building a 31-12 halftime lead and captured their 10th state championship in school history and fifth under Coach Sink.
At the end of the season, 10-time state champion Brea Olinda was ranked No. 8 in the nation, No. 4 in the state, No. 2 in Division I and No. 2 in the Southern Section.
These incredible season achievements have earned the Brea Olinda Wildcats an invitation to the 11th Annual Tour of Champions.
Please join us as we celebrate with the girls basketball team, coaching staff, students and fans on Friday, May 27 at 12:05 p.m. during a lunch assembly at the quad.
