Logan is 7-1 against Magdalena since September of 2018 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Friday. The Longhorns will face off against the Steers at 4:00 p.m. Both teams are coming into the matchup red-hot, with Logan sitting on seven straight victories and Magdalena on eight.
Logan is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Friday. Their defense stepped up to hand Floyd a 66-0 shutout. Considering the Longhorns have won seven games by more than 49 points this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.
Logan didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off five passes before the game was over. It was a group effort, with five picking up one apiece. Mason Wallin got in on the action too, converting a pick into a touchdown.
Meanwhile, Magdalena faced Mountainair in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Saturday. The Steers really took it to the Mustangs for the full four quarters, racking up a 40-8 win. The Steers are also no stranger to big wins: their blowout was the seventh contest they've won by 20+ points this season.
Logan better keep an eye on Prescott Herrera. He was instrumental in Magdalena's win, rushing for 204 yards and three touchdowns on only 14 carries. Those 204 rushing yards gave Herrera a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Ky Stephens, who rushed for 74 yards and one TD on only eight carries.
Magdalena was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 235 rushing yards. That's the most rushing yards they've managed all season.
On the defensive side of the ball, a lot of the credit has to go to Magdalena's defense and their three sacks. The team can thank three different players for their defensive prowess: Herrera, Michael Young, and Brayman Padilla, who each picked up one sack apiece.
Logan's victory bumped their record up to 9-1. As for Magdalena, their win bumped their record up to 8-1.
Friday's matchup might be decided on the ground. Logan has been excellent on the ground this season, having averaged 147.8 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Magdalena struggles in that department as they've been averaging 156.4 rushing yards. There's a good chance Friday's game turns into a tough fight on the ground.
Logan strolled past Magdalena when the teams last played back in August by a score of 47-32. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Longhorns since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
