High school football: Greatest yardage totals in a losing effort

State, national records have sometimes been set as teams come up on wrong side of the scoreboard.

Malaki Dowell of White County (Sparta, Tenn.) is the national leading rusher with 1,595 yards in five games. The Warriors are 4-1 on the season, suffering a 45-43 loss to Mount Juliet. Dowell was outstanding as usual, racking up 330 yards on 40 carries with four touchdowns.

Across the border in Kentucky on Sept. 9, Jerry Kpehe of Doss rushed for 332 yards and four touchdowns and ran an interception back for a score. However, it was not enough to lead the Dragons to victory as they fell to Frankfort 81-60.

In both games, spectacular performances were not enough to lead their teams to victory, and sometimes that's just how things work. Turnovers, penalties and outstanding performances by players on the winning team are sometimes enough to overcome a spectacular performance.

MaxPreps looks at 10 of the greatest performances in high school football history which, for one reason or another, did not lead to victory.
Matt Miller of DuBois threw for a Pennsylvania record 787 yards in 2015, but the Beavers fell 107-90 to Meadville.
