South Mecklenburg was handed a 23-point defeat in their previous outing, but that didn't affect their clutch gene on Friday. They had just enough and edged out the Community School of Davidson Spartans 16-13.

South Mecklenburg can attribute much of their success to Carter Gillis, who rushed for 72 yards and one TD, and also threw for 156 yards on 12 of 20 attempts. Those 72 rushing yards gave Gillis a new career-high.

The victory got South Mecklenburg back to even at 1-1. As for Community School of Davidson, their loss dropped their record down to 0-2.

Looking ahead, South Mecklenburg will venture away from home to take on Ballantyne Ridge at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Community School of Davidson, they will welcome Forest Hills at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
