Basketball Game Preview: Calabasas Coyotes vs. Oaks Christian Lions

Two dominant guards in Scarlett Weiner and Presley Kushner are getting ready to go toe-to-toe. The Calabasas Coyotes are taking a road trip to challenge the Oaks Christian Lions at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday.

On Monday, Calabasas had to suffer through a 60-24 loss at the hands of Newbury Park. While losing is never fun, the Coyotes can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 550th, while the Panthers are ranked 247th).

Meanwhile, a well-balanced attack led Oaks Christian over Agoura in every quarter on their way to victory on Monday. Given that consistent dominance, it should come as no surprise that Oaks Christian blew Agoura out of the water with a 64-29 final score. The Lions pushed the score to 49-19 by the end of the third, a deficit the Chargers had little chance of recovering from.

Calabasas better focus on containing Kushner and Andrea Woodward as the pair were huge in Oaks Christian's win. Kushner went 8 of 14 en route to 22 points and four steals, while Woodward almost dropped a double-double on 12 points and nine steals. Those nine steals gave Woodward a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Faith ODaniel, who posted ten points along with six assists and six steals.

Oaks Christian smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 25 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive boards in 17 consecutive games.

Oaks Christian's win ended a three-game drought on the road and puts them at 5-12. As for Calabasas, their defeat dropped their record down to 6-8.

Calabasas didn't have too much breathing room in their contest against Oaks Christian in their previous matchup back in January of 2024, but they still walked away with a 76-71 victory. One of the biggest obstacles trying to stand in the way of that victory was Oaks Christian's Brooklyn Shamblin, who went 8 of 10 on her way to 30 points and five rebounds. Now that she won't be playing on Wednesday, will it be easier for Calabasas to walk away with another win? There's only one way to find out.
