Basketball Recap: Marquez Piles Up the Points Against Sotomayor

Marquez had already won five in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 26.8 points) and they went ahead and made it six on Monday. They blew past the Sotomayor Wolves 53-26. The Gladiators have seen this before: they got the W the last time they saw the Wolves, too.

Marquez had a senior duo take command as Corshell Vaughn dropped a double-double on 14 points and 28 boards and Magaly Gonzalez dropped a double-double on 18 points and ten rebounds. Vaughn has been hot for a while, having posted 11 or more boards the last 34 times she's played. Samantha Larios was another key player, putting up eight points and seven rebounds.

Marquez smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 22 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least ten offensive rebounds in six consecutive matches.

Despite the defeat, Sotomayor had strong showings from Destiny Velasco, who posted 14 points and eight boards, and Janie Gallardo, who put up nine points and eight rebounds.

Marquez pushed their record up to 12-7 with the victory, which was their fifth straight on the road. They've dominated over that stretch too, winning by an average of 33.6 points. As for Sotomayor, with the loss, they broke their three-game winning streak and moved their record to 6-5.

Marquez will challenge Elizabeth at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. Marquez is facing Elizabeth at the right time seeing as Elizabeth is stuck on a nine-game losing streak. As for Sotomayor, they will square off against Maywood CES at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. The two teams have allowed few points on average, (Maywood CES: 28.4, Sotomayor: 28.1) so any points scored will be well earned.
