Basketball Recap: Laine Poborski's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Conemaugh Valley over Portage

Conemaugh Valley was not able to break out of their rough patch on Thursday as the team picked up their fourth straight loss. They lost 62-41 to the Portage Mustangs. The Blue Jays were in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 40-20.

Conemaugh Valley lost despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Laine Poborski, who posted eight points and ten rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Gwen Masser, who put up eight points and five rebounds.

Portage found their leader in sophomore Kendall Bednarski, who went 6 of 15 on her way to 18 points in addition to seven boards and three steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Bednarski has scored all season. Another player making a difference was Liana Bagby, who went 5 of 10 on her way to 12 points and three steals.

Conemaugh Valley's defeat dropped their record down to 0-4. As for Portage, they are on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four contests, which provided a nice bump to their 3-3 record this season.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Conemaugh Valley and Ferndale will compete for holiday cheer at 7:15 p.m. on Monday. As for Portage, it'll be an old-fashioned rodeo when the Portage Mustangs take on the Northern Cambria Colts at 7:15 p.m. on Wednesday. Portage is facing Northern Cambria at the right time seeing as Northern Cambria is stuck on a five-game losing streak.
