Recap: Esparto Spartans vs. Rio Vista Rams

This season hasn't been kind to the Esparto Spartans, who are still winless after their ninth match. They had to suffer through a rough 58-17 loss at the hands of Rio Vista. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest defeat Esparto has suffered against Rio Vista since January 3, 2017.

Esparto got a good chunk of their points from the dynamic duo of Jeriann Moore and Lisandra Martinez, who each put up five points.

Samiah Holley continued her habit of posting crazy stat lines for Rio Vista, dropping a double-double on 17 points and 11 steals. Holley is absolutely dominating the steal category: she's posted at least two every time she's taken the court this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Kenayah Banks, who scored nine points along with eight rebounds and two steals.

Esparto bumped their record down to 0-9 with that defeat, which was their 15th straight on the road dating back to last season. Those losses could be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they only averaged 15.9 points per game. As for Rio Vista, the win got them back to even at 8-8.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Esparto will take on San Juan at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are ranked near one another in California (San Juan is ranked 1330th, while Esparto is ranked 1325th). As for Rio Vista, their homestand continues as they prepare to take on Vacaville Christian at 6:00 p.m. on January 12th. Hopefully Vacaville Christian focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 14 on Tuesday.
