Baseball Recap: Mentor Takes a Loss

Mentor had lost four straight on the road, but on Monday they dropped down to 7-16 to make it five. They lost 10-2 to the Mayfield Wildcats. The Cardinals were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Wildcats apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in May of 2019.

As for Mayfield, they are on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four matchups. That's provided a massive bump to their 11-12 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 7.8 runs over those games.

For Mayfield's part, Connor Mize looked comfortable as he struck out nine batters over four innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits. Mize has been consistent for a while: he hasn't given up more than one earned run any time he's pitched this season.

On the hitting side, Jonah Koret was a standout: he went 2-for-3 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run. Another player making a difference was Ethan Claflin, who got on base in all four of his plate appearances with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI.

Mentor and Mayfield are set to take part in some playoff action in their next matches. The Cardinals will face off against St. Edward at 5:00 p.m. on the 27th. As for Mayfield, they will square off against Kirtland at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The Wildcats' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Hornets have averaged an impressive 6.4 runs per game this season.
