Basketball Recap: Hilmar Falls Despite Big Games from Emma Gomes and Madalyn Alvares

Hilmar was not able to break out of their rough patch on Tuesday as the team picked up their 12th straight defeat dating back to last season. They received a blow as they fell 42-26 to the Merced Bears. The Yellowjackets were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Bears apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in December of 2022.

Hilmar's loss came despite strong showings from Madalyn Alvares and Emma Gomes. Alvares posted seven points along with six boards and three steals, while Gomes had eight points and ten rebounds. Gomes is crushing it when it comes to boards: she's pulled down at least eight every time she's taken the court this season.

Merced found their leader in sophomore Averie Steverson, who almost dropped a double-double on 21 points and nine steals. Those nine steals gave Steverson a new career-high. Makiiyah Sims was another key player, putting up seven points and three steals.

Hilmar's record is now 0-5. As for Merced, they are on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 3-4 record this season.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Hilmar will square off against Pacific Grove at 5:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Merced, they will face off against Ceres at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday.
