Baseball Recap: Saugus Comes Up Short

Saugus and Rio Mesa squared off in some playoff action on Friday, but Saugus had to settle for second. They fell just short of the Spartans by a score of 2-1. Having soared to a lofty 11 runs in the game before, the Centurions couldn't push the score so high this time.

Gavin Diaz was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: he struck out seven batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits. Saugus is 7-2 when Diaz allows one or fewer earned runs, but 9-13 otherwise.

At the plate, Saugus saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was JD Lawless, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base.

Saugus' loss dropped their record down to 16-15. As for Rio Mesa, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won 15 of their last 16 contests. That's provided a massive bump to their 20-10 record this season.

Saugus does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for Rio Mesa, they will take on Glendora at 3:15 p.m. on Tuesday. The Spartans' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Tartans have averaged an impressive 6.8 runs per game this season.
