Basketball Recap: St. Bernard's Luck Takes a Turn for the Worse on Tuesday

It was a good run, but St. Bernard unfortunately witnessed the end of their 19-game winning streak on Tuesday. They fell just short of the Dougherty Valley Wildcats by a score of 47-45. The loss was a bit of a surprise, as the Crusaders came into the contest with a sizable advantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 66th in California, while the Wildcats are ranked 236th in California).

Despite the loss, St. Bernard's still got an impressive performance from Laila Florvilus, who almost dropped a double-double with 18 points and nine rebounds. That was a full 40% of St. Bernard's points, marking the third time in a row Florvilus has posted more than a third of the team's points. Another player making a difference was Samantha Sundberg, who had eight points and nine boards.

Even though they lost, St. Bernard's smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 15 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least ten offensive boards every time they've taken the court this season.

St. Bernard's loss dropped their record down to 28-2. As for Dougherty Valley, the win (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 21-10.

The two teams are set to take part in some playoff action in their next matches. St. Bernard's will welcome Fortuna at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. St. Bernard's is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 60.9 points per game this season. As for Dougherty Valley, a feisty cat fight will be fought as the Wildcats face off against the Panthers at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday.
