One doesn’t need to be a huge high school football fan to figure out where the majority of the top college recruits in the country are from.
Texas and Florida, of course.
Heading into the regular National Signing Day period that starts Wednesday, a tally of the top 250 recruits from the Class of 2020, according to 247Sports, reveals that Florida and Texas each claim 38 players who got their high school football training from those respective states.
It’s the No. 3 ranked state that might fool many. The obvious guess would be California, but in fact the third biggest hotbed for top 2020 recruits is Georgia, with 25 players, followed by the Golden State with 24.
From there, there’s a significant drop-off, with North Carolina (12) and Maryland (11) each boasting double digit top 247 recruits, followed by Louisiana and Alabama with nine each. Of those eight states, six are from the South.
Considering the comparative small populations of Louisiana (4.7 million), Alabama (4.9 million) and Maryland (6.0 million), those are impressive numbers.
Other state populations by the millions from the top eight top-recruited regions: California (39.6), Texas (28.7), Florida (21.3), Georgia (10.5) and North Carolina (10.4).
Of the 31 5-star players 247Sports rated, Texas once again rated at the top with five, followed by California and Georgia with four and Maryland and Florida three. Of the Top 10 overall players, California claimed three, followed by Georgia with two and Maryland, Pennsylvania, Arizona, Ohio and South Carolina with one each.
