Football Recap: Murphy Skates Past Hayesville with Ease

Murphy came tearing into Friday's game with four straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 43 points), and they left with even more momentum. They simply couldn't be stopped as they easily beat the Hayesville Yellowjackets 50-7. The contest was pretty much decided by the half, when the score had already reached 44-7.

It was another big night for Cameron Clem, who rushed for 75 yards and four scores on only seven carries. That's the most rushing touchdowns he has posted since back in October of 2024. Brady Grant was another key player, throwing for 100 yards and a pair of touchdowns while completing 75% of his passes.

Murphy didn't let much get past them through the air: they limited Hayesville to a completion percentage of just 43.8%. That dominant aerial defense primarily came from two players: Ryan Payne and Brody Orton, who each logged one passes deflected. Murphy has been improving in that area: they had allowed a completion percentage of 0.64 earlier this season, but they've only allowed one of 0.64 in their last three games.

Murphy's defense didn't let the opposing QB, get away unscathed either: they got into the backfield for three sacks. The team can thank three different players for their defensive prowess: Lucas Burrell, Landen Lape, and Jude Pinkerton, who each picked up one sack apiece.

Murphy's win bumped their record up to 7-2. As for Hayesville, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 5-4.

Looking ahead, Murphy will challenge Swain County at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. The Maroon Devils will aim to continue their three-game streak of scoring more points each matchup than the last. As for Hayesville, they will take on Andrews at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. The Yellowjackets will be up against the Wildcats' rather soft defense (which has allowed 41.89 points per game), so fans could be in store for a big offensive performance.
