Basketball Recap: Ellyanna Tovar's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Highland over Independence

Highland was not able to break out of their rough patch on Tuesday as the team picked up their fourth straight loss. They lost to the Independence Falcons at home by a 53-34 margin. While losing is never fun, the Scots can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 1026th, while the Falcons are ranked 486th).

Highland's defeat came despite a true team effort with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Ellyanna Tovar, who posted ten points.

Independence's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Kenadi Walton, who dropped a double-double with ten points and ten rebounds. Walton is becoming a predictor of Independence's success: when she posts at least ten boards the team is 11-4 (and 1-5 when she doesn't). The team also got some help courtesy of Madison Harrold, who went 5-for-10 en route to 11 points and eight rebounds.

Highland's loss dropped their record down to 8-16. As for Independence, they are on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four matches, which provided a nice bump to their 12-9 record this season.

Highland wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next game, a 57-21 defeat against Stockdale on the 5th. As for Independence, they have also already played their next contest, a 72-26 loss against Bakersfield Christian on the 6th.
