Baseball Recap: Eureka Comes Up Short

Eureka fought the good fight in their extra-innings contest against El Paso-Gridley on Wednesday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Titans by a score of 14-13. That's two games in a row now that the Hornets have lost by just one run.

Teagan McLaughlin and John Martin did some serious damage despite the final result: McLaughlin got on base in four of his five plate appearances with three stolen bases, two runs, and two RBI, while Martin went 2-for-5 with one home run and four RBI. McLaughlin is becoming a predictor of Eureka's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 6-1 (and 3-7 when he doesn't). Adam Blunier was another key player, going 2-for-4 with two stolen bases and one RBI.

This is the second loss in a row for Eureka and nudges their season record down to 9-8. Even worse, they were so close both times: the losses came by an average of only one runs. As for El Paso-Gridley, their record now sits at 5-8.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Eureka will host Heyworth at 4:30 p.m. on Friday. Heyworth has struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 6.56 runs per game on average), something Eureka will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for El Paso-Gridley, they will look to defend their home field on Thursday against Richwoods at 6:00 p.m.
