Preview: North Star Cougars vs. Meyersdale Red Raiders
North Star is 9-1 against Meyersdale since December of 2015, and they'll have a chance to extend that success on Friday. The North Star Cougars will head out on the road to square off against the Meyersdale Red Raiders at 7:00 p.m. North Star is coming into the matchup on a five-game losing streak.
North Star suffered their biggest defeat since December 8, 2023 on Monday. They were dealt a 54-18 loss at the hands of Berlin Brothersvalley. While losing is never fun, North Star can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Pennsylvania basketball rankings (they are ranked 558th, while Berlin Brothersvalley is ranked 114th).
Meanwhile, it's never fun to lose, and it's even less fun to lose 51-22, which was the final score in Meyersdale's tilt against Windber on Monday. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest loss Meyersdale has suffered against Windber since December 19, 2019.
The loss doesn't tell the whole story though, as several players had good games. One of the most active was Laurel Daniels, who scored seven points along with two blocks. Another player making a difference was Jessica Daughton, who scored six points.
North Star's loss was their third straight at home, which bumped their record down to 3-11. That rough patch could be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they only averaged 27.3 points per game. As for Meyersdale, they have traveled a rocky road recently, as they've lost eight of their last nine contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 4-9 record this season.
North Star was able to grind out a solid win over Meyersdale in their previous meeting back in January of 2023, winning 54-46. Does North Star have another victory up their sleeve, or will Meyersdale turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
