Eight of 12 players selected for April 13 contest in Portland have USA Basketball experience.
A pair of future UConn and South Carolina teammates are among the 12 high school girls basketball players selected by USA Basketball for the second annual Nike Hoop Summit. The USA squad faces off against the World Team's top international players 19 and younger on April 13 at the Moda Center in Portland, Ore.
The roster features six Preseason MaxPreps All-Americans and seven on the
MaxPreps Player of the Year watch list.
Morgan Cheli of
Archbishop Mitty (San Jose, Calif.) and
Allie Ziebell of
Neenah (Wis.) will play together next season for Geno Auriemma at UConn while last year's MaxPreps Female Athlete of the Year
Joyce Edwards of
Camden (S.C.) and
Maddy McDaniel of
Bishop McNamara (Forestville, Md.) will join Dawn Staley's program at South Carolina.
Sue Phillips, Cheli's coach at Mitty, will lead the squad. She is joined by Tamika Dudley of
Sidwell Friends (Washington, D.C.), who also coaches her daughter
Kendall, and Hilda Hankerson of
Westlake (Atlanta, Ga.).
Mikayla Blakes of
Rutgers Prep (Somerset, N.J.), McDaniel,
Arianna Roberson of
Clark (San Antonio, Texas) and
Kennedy Smith of
Etiwanda (Calif.) all are making their USA Basketball debuts.
