High school football rankings: Carrollton takes over at No. 1 in MaxPreps Top 25 after 34-14 win over Grayson

Carrollton got its biggest win of the season with a 34-14 victory over previous No. 1 Grayson (Loganville) to advance to Georgia's AAAAAA semifinals. Two wins away from winning their first state title since 1998, the Trojans moved up 10 spots to No. 1 in this week's MaxPreps Top 25 high school football rankings. 

Up next for Carrollton (13-0) is 12-1 North Gwinnett (Suwanee) on Friday. The winner faces either No. 7 Buford or Valdosta at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Dec. 17. The Trojans have four wins against teams in our expanded top 100. 

No. 2 St. Frances Academy (Baltimore) will need some help to finish the year at No. 1 as it closes out the season Dec. 10 against No. 23 Corner Canyon (Draper, Utah). The Panthers are 8-1 and 1-1 against teams in the expanded top 100 with a 42-13 victory over No. 21 Chaminade-Madonna (Hollywood, Fla.) and a 21-14 loss at No. 19 St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.). No. 5 Southlake Carroll (Southlake) is still in the mix coming off its biggest win of the season. The Dragons knocked off Prosper 49-31 in the third round of the Conference 6A Division 2 playoffs. Seeking its first state crown since 2011, the Dallas-area program could have three more games against teams in the top 100.

Aforementioned Buford is another team with a shot at rising to No. 1. The Wolves are 3-0 against teams in the top 100 but are still looking for their first victory against a team currently in the MaxPreps Top 25. 

In California, Carson Palmer led Santa Margarita (Rancho Santa Margarita) to its first section title since 2011 with a dominant 42-7 win over Centennial (Corona) in the Southern Section Division 1 championship. Four-star wide receiver Trent Mosley had  10 catches for 292 yards and two touchdowns to go with two more scores on the ground. The Eagles moved up two spots to No. 4, while the Huskies dropped seven spots to No. 9. 

Santa Margarita will face No. 15 De La Salle (Concord) in the Open Division state championship game Dec. 13. 

There are three newcomers to the MaxPreps Top 25 this week.

Northwestern (Miami) checks in at No. 20 after a 50-29 win over Central (Miami) to advance to the Class 3A semifinals in Florida. Sophomore Neimann Lawrence threw seven touchdown passes in the win. The Bulls are two wins away from repeating as 3A state champs and face Bishop Moore (Orlando) on Friday.

Allen cracks the national rankings for the first time this season at No. 24 as it improved to 13-0 with a 56-13 win over Permian (Odessa) to advance to the Conference 6A Division 1 quarterfinals in Texas. The Eagles face North Crowley (Fort Worth) on Friday as they look to dethrone the defending state champs. 

Brownsburg (Ind.) takes the last spot at No. 25 after capping a 14-0 season. The Bulldogs started the year with a 36-23 win over Archbishop Spalding (Severn, Md.) and ended it with a 38-31 win over Westfield to repeat as Class 6A state champs.
