Las Cruces faced Volcano Vista in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Thursday. The Bulldawgs strolled past the Hawks with points to spare, taking the game 38-20. The Bulldawgs have seen this before: they got the W the last time they saw the Hawks, too.

Volcano Vista's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Aurelius Wiley, who threw for 192 yards and two touchdowns while completing 75% of his passes, and also rushed for 32 yards. Ismael Mendez III was Wiley's top target, picking up 115 receiving yards and one TD.

Las Cruces has started the season off flawlessly and has a 2-0 record to show for it. Those victories came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they've averaged 49.5 points this season. As for Volcano Vista, their defeat dropped their record down to 1-1.

Looking ahead, Las Cruces will look to defend their home field on Thursday against Rio Rancho at 7:00 p.m. As for Volcano Vista, they will venture away from home to challenge Sandia at 11:00 a.m. on September 6.
