Preview: Mater Dei Catholic Crusaders vs. San Marcos Knights
Mater Dei Catholic is 4-0 against San Marcos since January of 2015, and they'll have a chance to extend that success on Tuesday. The Mater Dei Catholic Crusaders will be staying on the road to face off against the San Marcos Knights at 7:00 p.m. on February 13th. Hopefully Mater Dei Catholic focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 25 on Friday.
Last Friday, Mater Dei Catholic came up short against Bonita Vista and fell 56-43. While losing is never fun, Mater Dei Catholic can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 469th, while Bonita Vista is ranked 148th).
Mater Dei Catholic's loss shouldn't obscure the performances of Promise Martin, who dropped a double-double on 13 points and 15 rebounds, and Otilia Sua who scored 13 points along with five rebounds. Martin hasn't dropped below two steals for eight straight games.
Meanwhile, San Marcos' recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Friday after their eighth straight defeat. They were dealt a 86-18 loss at the hands of Mission Hills. San Marcos has struggled against Mission Hills recently, as their contest on Friday was their eighth consecutive lost matchup.
Mater Dei Catholic has not been sharp recently as the team has lost four of their last five matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 10-15 record this season. As for San Marcos, they dropped their record down to 11-17 with that defeat, which was their fifth straight on the road.
Mater Dei Catholic strolled past San Marcos when the teams last played back in February of 2023 by a score of 56-37. One of the biggest obstacles trying to stand in the way of that victory was San Marcos' Dayvis Key, who dropped a double-double on 15 points and 14 rebounds.
