Basketball Recap: Elk Grove Comes Up Short

After flying high against Foothill last Friday, Elk Grove came back down to earth. The Elk Grove Thundering Herd came up short against the Laguna Creek Cardinals on Wednesday, falling 53-33. While losing is never fun, the Thundering Herd can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 972nd, while the Cardinals are ranked 383rd).

Jestine Tofi was her usual excellent self, putting up 19 points along with seven steals and six boards for Laguna Creek. The dominant performance gave Tofi a new career-high in points. The team also got some help courtesy of Casey McCoy, who posted 11 points in addition to seven rebounds and three steals.

Elk Grove moved to 5-7 with that loss, which also ended their three-game winning streak. As for Laguna Creek, they are on a roll lately: they've won six of their last eight matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 10-6 record this season.

Coincidentally, the two teams will both be playing Monterey Trail the next time they take the court. Elk Grove will head out to face Monterey Trail at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, while Laguna Creek will host them at 6:30 p.m. on January 15th.
