Football Game Preview: Tohatchi Cougars vs. Shiprock Chieftains

Tohatchi is a perfect 4-0 against Shiprock since March of 2021 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Friday. The Cougars will head out on the road to square off against the Chieftains at 7:00 p.m. Tohatchi has given up an average of 34.5 points per game this season, but Friday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.

Tohatchi is coming in off a wild two-game stretch: after soaring to 54 points last Friday, they were much more limited against Thoreau on Friday. They were outmatched by the Hawks and fell 51-0. The shutout was out of character for the Cougars seeing as the last time the team failed to score was back in August.

Meanwhile, Shiprock was not able to break out of their rough patch on Thursday as the team picked up their sixth straight loss. They took a 31-16 bruising from Wingate. On the bright side, the 16- point performance marked the Chieftains' highest-scoring game to date.

Although Shiprock took the loss, they still got scores from Blake Begay and Arnesto Manygoat.

Shiprock didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off three passes before the game was over. It was truly a group effort as Begay, Manygoat, and Akoni Clah picked up one apiece. Shiprock got some further help from Wakiyan Stash: he picked up a sack and made eight total tackles (2.0 for loss).

Shiprock's defeat dropped their record down to 0-6. As for Tohatchi, their loss dropped their record down to 2-4.

Everything came up roses for Tohatchi against Shiprock in their previous matchup back in October of 2024, as the team secured a 48-6 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Cougars since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
