Baseball Game Preview: San Ysidro Cougars vs. Montgomery Aztecs

The San Ysidro Cougars will head out to square off against the Montgomery Aztecs at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday. San Ysidro's pitching crew has only allowed 4.1 runs per game this season, so Montgomery's hitters will have their work cut out for them.

San Ysidro will bounce into Wednesday's contest after beating Bonita Vista, who they had gone 1-8 against in their nine prior meetings. The Cougars came out on top against the Barons by a score of 8-4 on Friday. The game was the first time the Cougars have beaten the Barons on their field since May 5, 2017.

The team relied heavily on Armann Robles, who went 2-for-4 with four RBI, two doubles, and one run. Those four RBI gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Emiliano Diaz, who went 2-for-3 with two runs.

San Ysidro always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .514. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Bonita Vista only posted an OBP of .344.

Meanwhile, there's no place like home for Montgomery, who bounced back after a loss on the road on Wednesday. They skirted past Eastlake 2-1. The victory was a breath of fresh air for the Aztecs as it put an end to their five-game losing streak.

Erick Ramos spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered only one earned run on six hits. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than one walk in five consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Montgomery's win was truly a team effort as three different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was AJ Ruvalcaba, who went 1-for-2 with one stolen base and one run.

San Ysidro's record is now 14-9. As for Montgomery, their victory was their first in the league, bumping their league record up to 1-3 and their overall record up to 8-13.

San Ysidro might still be hurting after the 7-1 defeat they got from Montgomery in their previous meeting back in March of 2023. Can the Cougars avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
