Baseball Recap: Monroe Comes Up Short

If Monroe was feeling good fresh off their 21-1 takedown of Calhoun County on Wednesday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Tornadoes came up short against the Westover Patriots on Thursday, falling 10-4. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Patriots this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 14-10 on Monday.

Javion Tinch spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered only one earned (and four unearned) runs on four hits. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than two walks in six consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Kyle Vicks made the most of his time in the batter's box despite the final result and got on base in all four of his plate appearances with four stolen bases, one run, and one double. Curtis Walker was another key player, getting on base in all three of his plate appearances with two stolen bases.

Monroe has traveled a rocky road recently, having lost seven of their last eight games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 6-15 record this season. As for Westover, their victory ended a four-game drought at home and bumped them up to 2-11.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Monroe will welcome Carver at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. As for Westover, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Westside at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday. The Seminoles have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 11.89 runs per game on average), something the Patriots will no doubt try to take advantage of.
