Basketball Recap: Platteview Comes Up Short

Platteview's game on Saturday was all tied up 30-30 at the half, but sadly for them it didn't stay that way. They were just a bucket shy of victory and fell 60-59 to the Gross Catholic Cougars. The Trojans were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Cougars apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in December of 2023.

When it comes to explaining why Platteview lost, don't look at Owen Trofholz. Despite the final result, he went 7-for-10 on his way to 23 points and seven boards. Thanks to that strong game, Trofholz now owns an excellent 49.1% shooting accuracy. Another player making a difference was Levi Ekue, who posted eight points and 13 rebounds.

Gross Catholic was led to victory by Colton Sweetmon and Ty Heilig. Sweetmon almost dropped a double-double with 14 points and nine assists, while Heilig shot 47% from the field to rack up 21 points and three steals. Heilig is on a roll when it comes to steals, as he's now grabbed two or more in each of the last four games he's played. Dut Akot also deserves some recognition as he grabbed his first steal of the season.

Platteview's record now sits at 3-2. As for Gross Catholic, the victory keeps them at an undefeated 5-0.

Coming up, Platteview will head out to challenge Beatrice at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Trojans' defense better be ready for this one: the Orangemen have averaged an impressive 50.5 points per game this season. As for Gross Catholic, they will be home for the holidays to greet Pius X at 7:15 p.m. on Tuesday. The Cougars will be up against the Thunderbolts' rather soft defense (which has allowed 57.83 points per contest), so fans could be in store for a big offensive performance.
