Football Recap: Paramus Catholic Comes Up Short in High-Profile Game with Depaul Catholic

Paramus Catholic faced DePaul Catholic in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Friday. The Paladins took a 26-14 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Spartans. The loss continues a trend for the Paladins in their meetings with the Spartans: they've now lost eight in a row.

Paramus Catholic's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Chukwuma Odoh, who rushed for 115 yards, and also picked up 37 receiving yards. Achylles Dupont helped out on the ground, rushing for 80 yards.

DePaul Catholic's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Derek Zammit, who rushed for 121 yards on only five carries, and also threw for 136 yards and two TDs. The bulk of those rushing yards came from one huge play: a run that gained an incredible 70 yards. Another player making a difference was Marquan Carter, who rushed for 76 yards and a pair of scores on only nine carries.

Paramus Catholic's loss dropped their record down to 1-4. As for DePaul Catholic, the win (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 4-1.

Looking ahead, Paramus Catholic will face off against St. Thomas Aquinas at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. The Paladins will need to watch out since the Trojans have now posted at least 31 points in their last three matchups. As for DePaul Catholic, they will take on Don Bosco Prep at 6:00 p.m. on Friday.
