The Air Academy Kadets will square off against the Pueblo Centennial Bulldogs at 3:30 p.m. on Friday. Air Academy is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9.8 runs per game this season.
Air Academy is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Colorado's top teams: Lutheran, who was ranked seventh at the time (Air Academy was ranked 24th). The Kadets came up short against the Lions on Wednesday, falling 10-0. The Kadets have struggled against the Lions recently, as the game was their eighth consecutive lost matchup.
Air Academy saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Lucy Nelson, who went 1-for-2 with one stolen base.
Meanwhile, after low-scoring totals in their previous three game, Pueblo Centennial brought some dynamite into their most recent contest. Their pitcher stepped up to hand Pueblo East a 15-0 shutout on Tuesday. The Bulldogs have beaten the Eagles the last six times they've met, but they better watch out: this was the closest the Eagles has come to flipping the script.
Ellie Zinanti made a splash no matter where she played. On the mound, she kept things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out ten over five innings pitched. That's the most strikeouts she has posted since back in August. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with two RBI.
In other batting news, Pueblo Centennial let Kayli Smiley and Marissa Fisher run wild. Smiley went 2-for-3 with three runs, three RBI, and one triple, while Fisher went 2-for-3 with three RBI, two runs, and one stolen base. That's the most runs Fisher has posted since back in September. Another player making a difference was Adrianna Lopez, who went 2-for-4 with three runs and one RBI.
Pueblo Centennial always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .541. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Pueblo East only posted an OBP of .118.
Air Academy's loss dropped their record down to 14-5-1. As for Pueblo Centennial, they now have a winning record of 11-10.
Friday's matchup might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Air Academy has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .468. However, it's not like Pueblo Centennial struggles in that department as they've averaged .454. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
