Monarchs, Gaels also met as the nation's top-ranked teams in 2017.

When No. 1 Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) and No. 2 Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas) square off Friday at the Santa Ana Bowl it will be the 14th time since 2000 that the top two teams in high school football have met. The last time was in 2022 when St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.) beat Mater Dei 24-22 in the Southern Section Division 1 championship.

In fact, St. John Bosco and Mater Dei have met in the last four matchups between No. 1 and No. 2.

Back in 2017, Mater Dei and Bishop Gorman met under very similar circumstances. The Gaels were the defending MaxPreps National Champs riding a long win streak – 55 in a row – and were ranked No. 2 in the MaxPreps Top 25. The Monarchs won 35-21 and went wire-to-wire as the No. 1 team in the country without trailing at any point in the season.

Gorman brings a 27-game win streak into Friday and are once again the reigning national champions.

The first two No. 1 vs. No. 2 showdowns of the 21st century featured De La Salle (Concord, Calif.) and Long Beach Poly (Long Beach, Calif.). The Spartans won both meetings. Raul Lara, now the head coach of Mater Dei, was the head coach of Long Beach Poly at the time.

From 2001 until 2013, the top-ranked teams in the nation only faced each other five times. When Mater Dei and Bishop Gorman square off on Friday, it will be the ninth time over the last decade.

This will be the eighth straight time that a California team is involved in a No. 1 vs. No. 2 matchup. Mater Dei has been involved in all eight games and is 4-3 heading into Friday's matchup.

If Bishop Gorman wins, it will be the first time since 2015 someone other than St. John Bosco has beat Mater Dei. That came in the Southern Section Pac-5 Division semifinals when Centennial (Corona, Calif.) won, 42-36. The Monarchs are 17-0 against out-of-state competition during the MaxPreps era.
