Basketball Recap: Conemaugh Township Comes Up Short

Conemaugh Township suffered their closest loss since December 10, 2024 on Wednesday. They fell just short of the Portage Mustangs by a score of 49-46. Sadly, that's the second time they've come up short against the Indians this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 62-47 last Monday.

Despite the loss, Conemaugh Township still got an impressive performance from Ava Byer, who almost dropped a double-double on 14 points and nine rebounds. The dominant performance also gave Byer a new career-high in blocks (five). Mayce Kordell was another key player, putting up eight points and seven boards.

Even though they lost, Conemaugh Township was working as a unit and finished the game with ten assists. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Portage only racked up four assists.

Portage found their leader in sophomore Kendall Bednarski, who posted 33 points and eight steals. Bednarski's evening made it seven games in a row in which she has scored at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Liana Bagby, who earned 12 points and six rebounds.

Conemaugh Township's defeat was their third straight on the road, which dropped their record down to 8-10. As for Portage, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 11-8.

Conemaugh Township will take on United at 7:15 p.m. on Friday. As for Portage, they will face off against Cambria Heights at 7:15 p.m. on Friday. Cambria Heights will roll in looking for their seventh straight victory, something Portage surely won't give up without a fight.
