Basketball Recap: Liberty Comes Up Short

Liberty was not able to break out of their rough patch on Monday as the team picked up their third straight loss. They had to suffer through a 56-28 loss at the hands of the Hemet Bulldogs. While losing is never fun, the Bison can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 1109th, while the Bulldogs are ranked 328th).

Liberty got a good chunk of their points from the dynamic duo of Malaya Baker and Kelli Harris-Wellman, who each put up nine points. Harris-Wellman also led the team in rebounds with 12.

Hemet was led to victory by Ruby Gonzalez- Horta and Hailey Wolbeck. Gonzalez- Horta dropped a double-double on 11 points and 12 rebounds, while Wolbeck went 6 of 11 on her way to 15 points in addition to five boards and three steals. The dominant performance also gave Gonzalez- Horta a new career-high in steals (eight). Another player making a difference was Shiloh Wigal, who posted six points and three steals.

Liberty's defeat dropped their record down to 5-16. As for Hemet, the win was the ninth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 21-4.

Liberty didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next matchup, a 46-34 loss against Rancho Verde on the 4th. As for Hemet, they will head out on the road to face off against Canyon Springs at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Hemet is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 51.5 points per game this season.
