Basketball Game Preview: South Spartans vs. West Warriors

South hasn't had much luck against West recently, but that could start to change on Saturday. The South Spartans will be playing at home against the West Warriors at 5:30 p.m. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, both will really light up the scoreboard.

South saw some tournament action on Monday. They managed a 55-50 win over Mater Dei Catholic. Given the Spartans' advantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 150th, while the Crusaders are ranked 312th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Meanwhile, West ended the year with a bang, routing Maryknoll 60-36 on Saturday. The Warriors have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won seven matches by 24 points or more this season.

West is on a roll lately: they've won 11 of their last 14 games, which provided a nice bump to their 13-6 record this season. The wins came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 58.1 points per game. As for South, their victory bumped their record up to 10-6.

South came out on top in a nail-biter against West when the teams last played back in January of 2024, sneaking past 47-45. Will South repeat their success, or does West have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
