Baseball Game Preview: Elyria Pioneers vs. St. Ignatius Wildcats

The Elyria Pioneers will take on the St. Ignatius Wildcats at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday. One thing working in Elyria's favor is that they have posted at least ten runs in their last four contests.

Elyria came out on top against Lorain on Wednesday thanks in part to the team's impressive five-run fourth inning. The Pioneers walked away with a 10-6 victory over the Titans. The win continues a trend for the Pioneers in their matchups with the Titans: they've now won three in a row.

Meanwhile, there's no place like home for St. Ignatius, who bounced back after a loss on the road two weeks ago. They blew past Mayfield 12-3 last Thursday.

Sam LoParo tossed a big game, pitching five innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off seven hits. He also tossed no walks, which is notable because St. Ignatius is 2-1 when he allows at most two walks, but 3-8 otherwise.

At the plate, Jacob Merheb was a standout: he went a perfect 4-for-4 with four runs, one stolen base, and one double. Those four runs gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Yadi Oliveras, who went 2-for-3 with three stolen bases and two runs.

St. Ignatius hit smart and finished the game with only one strikeout. The team has now struck out at least five batters in three consecutive matchups.

The victory was their first at home, bumping their record up to 5-9. As for Elyria, their record now sits at 7-18.

Elyria might still be hurting after the 8-1 loss they got from St. Ignatius in their previous matchup back in May of 2025. Can the Pioneers avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
