Baseball Game Preview: Mt. Zion Bulldogs vs. Douglass Astros

The Mt. Zion Bulldogs will head out on the road to take on the Douglass Astros at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Mt. Zion will be strutting in after a victory while Douglass will be coming in after a loss.

Mt. Zion will roll into the matchup after a wild two-game stretch: they only put up one run on Friday, then bounced right back against Stone Mountain on Tuesday. The Bulldogs put the hurt on the Pirates with a sharp 16-3 win. The result was nothing new for the Bulldogs, who have now won four contests by ten runs or more so far this season.

The team relied heavily on Nick Pearson, who scored four runs and stole nine bases while getting on base in all four of his plate appearances. Another player making a difference was Sharon Tillman, who scored two runs and stole five bases while going 3-for-3.

Mt. Zion kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. That's the most hits they've posted since the start of last season.

Meanwhile, Douglass was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their third straight defeat. They came up short against Luella, falling 15-1.

Mt. Zion's victory bumped their record up to 4-6. As for Douglass, their loss dropped their record down to 5-7.

Wednesday's game might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Mt. Zion has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .492. However, it's not like Douglass struggles in that department as they've averaged .520. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.

Mt. Zion was able to grind out a solid win over Douglass in their previous meeting back in February of 2024, winning 11-7. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Bulldogs since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
