Preview: Aptos Mariners vs. Soquel Knights
Aptos and Soquel are an even 5-5 against one another since May of 2021, but not for long. The Aptos Mariners will be playing at home against the Soquel Knights at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Aptos has three straight victories, Soquel has three straight defeats), but none of that matters once you're on the field.
Aptos can now show off six landslide victories after their most recent game on Tuesday. They were the clear victor by a 60-34 margin over San Lorenzo Valley. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest win Aptos has posted since December 27, 2023.
Aptos relied on the efforts of Gabby Wickham, who scored 12 points along with seven assists and four steals, and Abby Sherwood, who dropped a double-double on 19 points and ten rebounds. That's the first time this season that Sherwood scored 15 or more points. Laurel Southall was another key contributor, scoring nine points along with five rebounds.
Soquel suffered their biggest defeat yet this season on Tuesday. They took a serious blow against Santa Cruz, falling 62-23. The result shouldn't come as a shock considering that's the fewest points Soquel has scored all season.
Aptos has been performing well recently as they've won seven of their last nine games, which provided a nice bump to their 13-7 record this season. As for Soquel, their loss was their sixth straight at home, which dropped their record down to 2-10.
Aptos was able to grind out a solid win over Soquel in their previous matchup on January 9th, winning 47-34. Will Aptos repeat their success, or does Soquel have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
