Baseball Recap: Cumberland Takes a Loss

Cumberland fought the good fight in their extra-innings matchup against Shelbyville on Friday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Rams by a score of 9-8. That's two games in a row now that the Pirates have lost by just one run.

Maddox Miller put in work while hitting and pitching. He struck out six batters over 5.1 innings while giving up three earned (and four unearned) runs off five hits. Miller was also big at the plate, going 2-for-5 with one stolen base and one run.

In other batting news, Grady Jones made the most of his time in the batter's box despite the final result and went a perfect 4-for-4 with three runs, one stolen base, and one double. Another player making a difference was Hudson McElravy, who went 4-for-5 with two RBI and one run.

Cumberland now has a losing record of 1-2. As for Shelbyville, their win was their ninth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 2-0.

Cumberland didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next game, a 12-1 defeat against Teutopolis on the 23rd. As for Shelbyville, they have also already played their next contest, a 7-5 victory against Dieterich on the 23rd.
