Recap: Steele Canyon Cougars vs. Santana Sultans
Make it eight blowout wins for the Steele Canyon Cougars this season. They really took it to Santana for the full four quarters, racking up a 55-21 victory on the road. The match was pretty much decided by the half, when the score had already reached 35-6.
Deanna Guerrero was her usual excellent self, dropping a double-double on 21 points and 14 rebounds. She hasn't dropped below eight rebounds for five straight games. The team also got some help courtesy of Brianda Benitez, who scored ten points along with six assists and two steals.
Despite the loss, Santana saw an underclassman step up: Harper Diaz scored 14 points. That was a full 66.7% of Santana's points, marking the third time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points.
Steele Canyon has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won seven of their last eight contests, which provided a nice bump to their 11-6 record this season. As for Santana, they are on a six-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 4-14.
Steele Canyon won't have much time to rest: their next match is against Hoover at 7:00 p.m. on January 10th. Hoover is strutting with some offensive muscle, as they've averaged 51.4 points per game. As for Santana, they will head out on the road to challenge West Hills at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. West Hills presents a significant challenge as they come into the match much higher ranked than Santana in California (West Hills is ranked 486th, while Santana is ranked 1237th).
