The Capistrano Valley Cougars will challenge the Cypress Centurions at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Capistrano Valley has three straight wins, Cypress has three straight losses), but none of that matters once you're on the field.
Capistrano Valley gave up the first points on Friday, but they didn't let that get them down. They breezed past Western to the tune of 41-14. Considering the Cougars have won four games by more than 19 points this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.
Talon Spencer continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines, rushing for 121 yards and three scores on only 15 carries, while also throwing for 98 yards and one touchdown. Izaiah Bennett made the highlight reel by snagging an interception and taking it all the way to the house.
They were just one part of a punishing run game: Capistrano Valley was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 214 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 210 rushing yards in three consecutive matchups.
Meanwhile, Cypress fell victim to Tustin and their airtight defense on Thursday. They had to suffer through a 39-0 loss at the hands of the Tillers. While losing is never fun, the Centurions can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California football rankings (they are ranked 233rd, while the Tillers are ranked 43rd).
Cypress' defeat dropped their record down to 3-3. As for Capistrano Valley, their victory bumped their record up to 5-1.
Friday's contest might be decided in the trenches. Capistrano Valley has been excellent on the ground this season, having averaged 187.2 rushing yards per game. It's a different story for Cypress, though, as they've been averaging only 79.2 rushing yards. How will they fare against such a dominant running game?
Everything came up roses for Capistrano Valley against Cypress in their previous matchup back in October of 2024, as the squad secured a 50-22 win. Do the Cougars have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Centurions turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
