High school football: Every state's greatest kicker

By Kevin Askeland Sep 30, 2021, 11:15am

Justin Tucker set the NFL field goal record, but doesn't make the cut in our look at each state's greatest leg.

Justin Tucker of the Baltimore Ravens set an NFL record Sunday with a 66-yard field goal to beat the Detroit Lions. In his 10th season, Tucker ranks 40th in scoring in NFL history, but how does he rank among all-time greats from his home state?

Tucker, and Austin, Texas native, played at Westlake, the alma mater of Drew Brees and Nick Foles. With 1,251 career points, Tucker doesn't even rank among the top five kickers to come out of Texas.

In fact, Lake Highlands alone has produced the top two kickers from Texas — Matt Stover and Phil Dawson. Others ahead of Tucker include Matt Bryant (Bridge City), Mason Crosby (Georgetown) and Mark Mosely (Livingston).

MaxPreps has identified the leading NFL kick scorer from each. Kickers are listed with their career total points and field goals. A few players on the list, like Gino Cappelletti, Ken Strong and George Blanda, played positions other than kicker and scored some touchdowns, but their primary scoring totals came as a kicker.

A total of 12 states did not have a kicker reach the NFL, including Alaska, Delaware, Idaho, Kansas, Maine, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Dakota, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, Wyoming.
Stephen Hauschka is the greatest kicker from Massachusetts.
