Soccer Game Preview: Gilroy vs. Pioneer

The Gilroy Mustangs will take on the Pioneer Mustangs at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday.

Gilroy managed to keep up with Leigh until halftime on Tuesday, but things quickly went downhill from there. Gilroy lost 4-0 to Leigh. While losing is never fun, the Mustangs can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California soccer rankings (they are ranked 401st, while the Longhorns are ranked seventh).

Meanwhile, Pioneer had already won four in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 4.8 goals) and they went ahead and made it five on Tuesday. They never let the Pirates onto the board and left with a 2-0 victory. Give the Mustangs' defense some credit: that's the team's fifth straight shutout.

Rylee Ronchetti and Melanie Gomez scored both of Pioneer's goals, bringing their combined season tally to 11 goals.

Pioneer's win was their seventh straight at home, which pushed their record up to 9-1. The wins came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they scored 42 goals over those seven matchups. As for Gilroy, they now have a losing record at 3-4.
