Football Game Preview: Irvine Vaqueros vs. Canyon Comanches

Two dominant signal callers in Sina Saferzadeh and Alexander Lundsberg are getting ready to go toe-to-toe. The Irvine Vaqueros are taking a road trip to face off against the Canyon Comanches at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Irvine has four straight wins, Canyon has three straight defeats), but none of that matters once you're on the field.

Irvine is headed in fresh off scoring the most points they have all season. They breezed past Santa Ana to the tune of 43-7 on Friday. Considering the Vaqueros have won four contests by more than 19 points this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.

Irvine got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Enzo Cahoon out in front who picked up 91 receiving yards and a pair of scores.

Irvine didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off three passes before the game was over. It was truly a group effort as Chad Russom, Cole Riedel, and Saferzadeh picked up one apiece.

Meanwhile, there was early excitement for Canyon after they claimed the first score on Friday, but it was El Toro who ended up claiming the real prize. The Comanches fell 27-17 to the Chargers. While losing is never fun, the Comanches can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California football rankings (they are ranked 358th, while the Chargers are ranked 150th).

Although Canyon took the loss, they still got scores from Noah McClary and Kellen Rommelfanger.

Irvine's win bumped their record up to 5-1. As for Canyon, their loss dropped their record down to 2-4.

Everything came up roses for Irvine against Canyon in their previous meeting back in October of 2024, as the team secured a 57-24 victory. One of the biggest obstacles the team faced in that game was Lundsberg, who threw for 316 yards and three TDs.
