Baseball Recap: Richland County Comes Up Short

For whatever reason, it's the away team that's had the advantage when Richland County and Newton meet (four straight games heading into this one) and that held true again on Thursday. The Tigers took a 7-4 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Eagles. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Tigers of the 9-2 defeat they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in April of 2025.

Brody Redman stepped up to lead a balanced group of hitters: he went 2-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double. He is becoming a predictor of Richland County's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 2-1 (and 2-5 when he doesn't). The team also got some help courtesy of Nolen Seals, who went 2-for-3 with one triple and two RBI.

Richland County's loss dropped their record down to 4-6. As for Newton, the victory was the eighth in a row for them, bringing their record up to 8-1.

Richland County and Newton should be looking forward to their upcoming games as both have a sizable advantage in the MaxPreps Illinois Rankings. The Tigers will take on Oblong/Hutsonville/Palestine at 4:30 p.m. on Monday with a big rank advantage (200 vs. 420). Meanwhile, Newton (ranked 31st) will meet Cumberland (ranked 366th) at 4:30 p.m. on Friday.
