American came tearing into Wednesday's contest with three straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 24.7 points) and they left with even more momentum. They came out on top against the Newark Memorial Cougars by a score of 53-45. Given the Eagles' advantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 169th, while the Cougars are ranked 712th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead American to victory, but perhaps none more so than Shirina Shi, who posted 22 points along with six rebounds and three steals. Another player making a difference was Anika Batra, who almost dropped a double-double on 16 points and nine boards.

When it comes to explaining why Newark Memorial lost, don't look at Angelina Baca. Despite the final result, she scored 22 points. That was a full 48.9% of Newark Memorial's points, marking the third time in a row she's had more than a third of the team's points. Mai Weeks was another key player, putting up 11 points.

American's win was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 16-4. Those victories came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 60.3 points per game. As for Newark Memorial, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 7-14.
