Football Recap: Otay Ranch Mustangs vs. Rancho Buena Vista Longhorns
Otay Ranch had to travel to play their first game of the season, but the final result was worth the trip. They simply couldn't be stopped on Friday as they easily beat the Rancho Buena Vista Longhorns 37-6.
Andrew 'AJ' Lopez looked great while leading his team to the win, throwing for 108 yards and three touchdowns, while also punching in one TD on the ground. Darius Hawkins helped Lopez out on the ground, rushing for 53 yards and one score.
Otay Ranch's defense stepped up as well, laying out Van Piercy. three times. Leading the way was Joshua Visser with two sacks. Otay Ranch got some further help from David Smith: he made ten total tackles (3.0 for loss).
Despite the defeat, Rancho Buena Vista saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Piercy rushed for 61 yards and one touchdown on only seven carries. Piercy's longest rush was for an impressive 60 yards, which helps to explain his lofty yards per carry total.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Otay Ranch will welcome Point Loma at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Rancho Buena Vista, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Sweetwater at 6:30 p.m. on Friday.
